King Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, Morocco.
The mosque rises above the ocean on a rocky outcrop reclaimed from the sea; taking literally the Islamic notion that states that God’s throne was built upon the water [1]. For those that are curious, this belief arises from Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 2953 and Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 4316. Upon deciding to build the mosque, King Hassan had declared: “I want to build this mosque on the water, because God’s throne is on the water. Therefore, the faithful who go there to pray, to praise the Creator on firm soil, can contemplate God’s sky and ocean.”

There shall be no coercion in matters of faith. Distinct has now become the right way from [the way of] error: hence, he who rejects the powers of evil and believes in God has indeed taken hold of a support most unfailing, which shall never give way: for God is all-hearing, all-knowing.
Al-Qur’an 2:256

They say that, when I was born,
my mother taught me to suck the milk.
And every night beside my crib
she taught me to sleep as soft as silk.
With a smile she pressed her lips to mine
till my mouth with joy overspilt.
She took my hand and guided my foot
till I learned to walk with a happy lilt.
One word, two words, then three and more -
that’s how she taught me to talk.
That’s why my life is part of her life
and will remain so as long as I live.
